West Virginia

All About West Virginia:

West Virginia is wild and wonderful, hence our slogan “West Virginia, wild and wonderful” we have many different types of flora and fauna, some of which are more special than others, some of which are below:

State Bird: Cardinal

The cardinal is a small red bird, sleek with some black feathers, they are rarely seen, but in West Virginia there is a belief that if you see a cardinal its about to start raining.

State Animal: Black Bear

The Black Bear, as the name already implies, it is a large black bear, Black Bears are omnivores, meaning the eat both plants and meat, Black Bears can grow up to 600lbs and be nearly 6 foot long. In the wild they generally live about 20 years without human disturbances.

State Fish: Brook Trout

A brook trout is normally sized around 10-12 inches but can grow up to 20-21 inches  and are usually 4-6 pounds each,  The largest Brook Trout however was not caught in West Virginia. The biggest known catch today was caught in 1916 in Ontario and weighing in at 14 and a half pounds, nearly three times the weight of an average brook trout.

State Flower: Rhododendron

There are over a thousand different species of rhododendron, but when most people think of a rhododendron, they think a white or pink flowering bush with leathery leaves.
